And the 31-year-old - who is likely to be replaced by Ali Price in the starting XV to take on Wales in round three - is now out of contention for the rest of the campaign.
A Scotland team statement said: "The extent of the damage is such that he will take no further part in the current Championship.
"Laidlaw will see a specialist later in the week to determine the best course of management and estimated time out of the sport."
